How to Publish a Book on Amazon and Make Money
Publishing is the easy part. A profitable KDP book needs a clear reader, controlled production costs, a price that supports the royalty band, and enough distribution to generate sales or page reads.
Start with the economics
Before writing or commissioning a cover, estimate the break-even point. An ebook sale produces a royalty based on list price, royalty rate and delivery cost. A print sale produces the list-price royalty minus the manufacturing cost. A Kindle Unlimited book can also earn from pages read if it is enrolled in KDP Select.
Run several price scenarios in the KDP royalty calculator and compare paperback scenarios with the print cost calculator. The goal is not the highest list price; it is a price that leaves room for fees, promotions and a realistic conversion rate.
Choose a commercial reader problem
Broad topics are difficult to market. Start with a specific reader and a specific job: a workbook for a defined skill, a practical guide for a defined profession, or a low-content format with a clear use case. Search Amazon for competing titles, read recent reviews, and note what readers say is missing.
Do not treat bestseller rank or social media screenshots as guaranteed income. Use them as clues, then validate the keyword, cover promise and reader expectation before spending on production.
Build a small, repeatable catalog
One book can earn, but a catalog usually makes the business more stable. Related books can share a reader, a mailing list and some production knowledge. A practical sequence is to publish one strong test title, measure clicks and sales, then create a closely related follow-up instead of jumping into unrelated niches.
For low-content books, the catalog must still be differentiated by audience, interior usefulness and presentation. See the low-content book guide for cost and positioning considerations.
Use the launch to learn
Track impressions, detail-page views, conversion rate, sales by format, pages read and advertising spend. Change one major variable at a time: cover, description, price or keywords. A discount that creates downloads is not automatically profitable unless it improves later sales or leads to a valuable reader relationship.
For Kindle Unlimited titles, use the KENP calculator to model how many completed reads are needed to reach a monthly target. Rates change, so check the monthly rate history rather than assuming one fixed payout.
Common profit mistakes
- Paying for a large print run before validating demand.
- Pricing from competitor screenshots without calculating printing cost.
- Buying ads before the cover and description convert organically.
- Counting revenue while ignoring editing, design, software and tax costs.
- Publishing many thin books instead of building a useful catalog.
A simple 30-day workflow
- Days 1–5: select the reader, keyword and book promise.
- Days 6–18: produce the manuscript, interior and cover.
- Days 19–22: proof, preview and calculate pricing.
- Days 23–30: publish, collect baseline data and decide whether to improve or continue the series.
Use the self-publishing cost guide to keep a complete budget, including costs that do not appear in the KDP royalty screen.
